Meet Adama Diop

""The most significant experience that has shaped me as a leader is when I went in my village in 2008 to meet all the community stakeholders' and organizations to discuss community issues and find solutions together. I wanted to do something for my community. Through that process, I founded Pellital Microfinance Institution.""

What inspires you?

The dynamic entrepreneurial women and girls of Agnam-Goly (my native village) are my source of inspiration. One day, they told me they do not have access to credit. There, I came into action with a solution. It’s called crowd funding and it works for the Agnam-Goly community! So, the Pellital Microfinance Institution was created to socially and financially empower the women of my village.

Tell us about an issue that matters to you and how you became aware and involved.

I am working towards women empowerment because of the social injustice and inequalities the women and girls of my village have to face in their daily life. So, I strongly believe that empowering them by the mean of a micro-credit program such as Pellital will not only help them to be more aware about themselves but it will also reduce harmful traditional practices and violence against them.

Share your perspectives on what makes a good leader.

To me a good leader is a visionary but also a realistic person. S/He is creative, enthusiastic, optimistic and positive. S/He creates leaders not followers.

Do you think TakingITGlobal can help you achieve some of your goals? Have we already?

I started using the TakingITGlobal online portal since 2007 and for me, it was in overall a very positive and enriching experience. I was awarded a 2012 Pearson Social Innovation Fellowhsip by TIG. So I got a $ 1,000 seed money grant for my project and I benefited from the tools and lessons given through the E-sprout online classes. Isn't it helpful? I am pleased to express here my gratitude to TakingITGlobal. I also extend my gratitude to all of my peers, the Pearson Foundation and the TakingITGlobal program staff for their guidance and effective support through my Pearson Fellowship journey. A special thank goes to Ms. Kristle Calisto-Tavares, the TakingITGlobal Manager of Social Innovation Programming, for her patience, positive energy and encouragement towards helping me to be a more realistic and accomplished social entrepreneur.
